Using past question and answer papers

All exam boards publish past question papers along with example answers and you can find these on their website. Your teacher will probably show you some of these and you might use them in lessons to practise with.

Use past question and answer papers to:

  • Help you understand how the exam paper will be laid out along with seeing the types of questions that are asked. If you look at several exam papers you will also start to notice patterns for the types of questions that are popular and the types of wording that is used. This is a big help when you are revising.
  • Become familiar with the style of exam answer the board wants. They will also give you tips on how to avoid common mistakes along with helping you understand the key knowledge required for different types of questions.
  • Help you understand how to apply what you have learnt. Knowing facts alone won’t get you high marks as very few questions require just a list of facts. Doing practice exam questions helps you understand how your knowledge can be used to answer a question in the right way.
  • Give questions to friends and family and get them to test you
  • Use the information to create cue cards, mind maps and diagrams
